Living in Monthey
A little Savoyard and Burgundian, a little Chablais and a little Valais, halfway between the lake and the mountains, rich in cultural (e.g. the Théâtre du Crochetan, known throughout French-speaking Switzerland), social and sports infrastructures, the town of Monthey covers an area of 2,677 hectares, 25% of which is considered to be residential and infrastructure.
The town, the economic gateway to the canton of Valais, has a strong industrial tradition, with world-renowned chemical companies, small and medium-sized enterprises active in fields as varied as construction, electronics, service, electromechanics and general mechanics, production of diamond tools, locksmithing and industrial piping, and shops.
On 31 December 2005, it had 706 establishments, 40% of which were in the secondary sector and 60% in the tertiary sector, 12 of which employed more than 100 people. The town offers a total of 8,278 jobs (full-time equivalent = 7,235 jobs). Of the jobs provided by Monthey, more than 50% are occupied by workers from another locality, 70% of whom are domiciled in the Chablais region (OIDC).
Today, the commune of Monthey wants to strengthen and revitalise its economic fabric by :
- Betting on the life sciences with the opening of a "Bioark" building for biotech companies;
- Focusing on the acquisition of industrial land for the establishment of new companies;
- Studying the urban planning and use of the former 'Giovanola' land;
- Maintaining regular contact with local businesses.
From a demographic point of view, the population growth factor of the town and the Chablais region is very favourable compared to Switzerland as a whole. In fact, from 1 January 2001 to 1 January 2007, the number of inhabitants increased by 12%, from 14,100 to 15,800. The foreign population represents 27.6% of the total population. At the end of 2016, Monthey had almost 18,000 inhabitants, so the demographic growth has been constant for over 10 years.
As far as tourism is concerned, Monthey offers the visitor, on a local level, the possibility to visit its Theatre, its markets, to discover its Castle and its exhibitions, its artists and their works at La Grange à Vanay, to take part in its renowned carnival, its important sporting events, such as the International Chablais Hockey Trophy, and above all to appreciate the "southern" character of its inhabitants. It is also ideally situated to be able to go to Saint-Maurice (Grotte aux fées and the Abbey Treasure), Lavey (Bains), Bex (Mines de Sel) and the leisure parks, among others, in both summer and winter, Labyritnhe-Aventure in Evionnaz or Aquaparc in Bouveret, Troistorrents (Moulin dela Tine ), Aigle (Château), not forgetting the magnificent Portes du Soleil domain, located between France and Switzerland, for walks or mountain biking, or simply for skiing.
Furthermore, we would like to inform you that in its June 2004 edition, the magazine "Bilan" ranks our city as one of the most financially attractive cities in Switzerland to live in.
